Segmental Block Retaining Walls in Lake Norman NC

Segmental block walls work when the invisible parts are right: a compacted leveling pad, clean drainage stone behind the face, and geogrid where the height calls for it. That is where we spend the effort.

Our Segmental Block Walls Services

Gravity block walls

Lower walls that hold by mass, built on a compacted, level base course.

Geogrid-reinforced walls

Taller walls tied back into the soil mass for long-term stability.

Terraced wall systems

Multiple lower walls instead of one tall one where the site allows.

Wall replacement

Rebuilding failed walls correctly instead of shimming them.

Segmental Block Walls for Lake Norman Properties

  • Lake Norman clay is a poor backfill material — drainage aggregate is what keeps these walls standing.
  • Four feet is the height most often cited locally as the point where a wall needs a permit — in Lincoln County (Denver, Sherrills Ford) confirm with Planning & Inspections at 704-736-8440.
  • Lakefront and hillside lots see concentrated runoff that loads walls harder than the height suggests.

Segmental Block Walls FAQs

How tall can a block wall be?

Gravity walls are usually limited to about three to four feet. Above that we use reinforcement and, where required, engineering. Permits are a separate question from engineering: four feet is the height commonly cited for a permit around Lake Norman, while the 2024 NC Residential Code (R404.4) requires a registered design professional once unbalanced backfill exceeds five feet — or sooner if the wall supports a structure, crosses a property line, or is terraced.

Why did my old wall fail?

Almost always base or drainage. Water pressure behind an unfree-draining wall pushes it out.

How long do these walls last?

Built correctly, decades — the block itself outlasts the installation mistakes that usually cause failures.
