Runoff along the back of the house was eroding the ground, carrying soil and mulch downhill instead of draining away. Replacing washed-out material every season doesn't fix anything — the water keeps taking the same path.
Built a stone-lined dry creek bed to give the water a defined channel away from the house, with stepping stones set through it so the walkway stays usable. Installed a segmental block retaining wall with steps up to the patio, arborvitae screening along the property line, and boxwood and flowering shrubs through new mulched beds.

Water follows a channel built to carry it instead of cutting its own. The erosion control is the best-looking part of the yard rather than something buried out of sight.
