Retaining Wall, Steps and Paver Landing on a Lakefront Home — Cornelius, NC

Completed: September 2026

The problem

The side entry of a new lakefront home sat above ground that falls toward Lake Norman. There was no level landing outside the door and no comfortable way down to the yard.

Site conditions

New construction on red clay, with the lot sloping toward the lake. Silt fence stayed in place along the shoreline while the work was underway.

What we did

Excavated the area and set the work on a compacted gravel base. Built a curved segmental block retaining wall with wide block steps and a capped seating edge, then laid a paver landing in a multi-size pattern framed by a dark border course. Drain stone and drain pipe were installed behind the wall so water does not build up against it. Finished the beds along the foundation with shrubs and mulch.

Materials

Segmental retaining wall block with matching caps and steps, multi-size pavers with a dark border course, compacted gravel base, drain stone and drain pipe behind the wall, shrubs and mulch.

Equipment: Mini excavator and compact track loader.

The result

A level landing at the door with wide steps down to the yard, and a wall with drainage behind it on a lot that falls toward the lake.
