Two patios of the same square footage can price very differently, and it is almost never the pavers themselves that explain the gap. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can read an estimate properly.
Size, shape and cutting
Square footage sets the baseline, but shape decides how much of it is cut work. A simple rectangle wastes little; sweeping curves, circles and multiple radii generate cuts, waste and labour hours.
Larger patios usually cost less per square foot than small ones, because mobilisation, excavation setup and haul-off are spread across more area.
Steps, seat walls, columns and inlays are priced as their own items and can easily exceed the paving itself.
Access and site conditions
If a machine can reach the work area, excavation and material handling are fast. If everything has to be wheeled through a gate by hand, the same job takes far longer.
Existing surfaces to demolish, trees and roots to work around, and utilities in the way all add time.
Slope is the big one. A patio on flat ground is straightforward; a patio that needs cut, fill, retaining or steps to create a level surface is a different project.
Base, drainage and what is under the surface
Base depth is set by soil and use. Soft, wet clay needs deeper excavation, more aggregate, geotextile and sometimes a drain line under the base — real cost you cannot see in the finished patio.
Haul-off volume matters. Excavated clay has to go somewhere, and disposal is priced by the load.
Drainage work around the patio — piped downspouts, a channel drain at a wall, regrading the surrounding lawn — is frequently part of doing the job properly rather than an upsell.
Materials and the extras
Paver choice spans a wide range: standard concrete pavers at one end, large-format and premium ranges and natural stone at the other. Borders and accent colours add material and labour.
Polymeric sand, edge restraint and sealing are line items worth confirming are included.
Lighting conduit, gas lines and irrigation sleeving are cheap now and expensive later — worth pricing into the original build.
