Concrete pavers
Manufactured to consistent dimensions, which matters more than it sounds — uniform thickness is what allows a flat, comfortable surface over a large area.
They come in every size, shape and colour family, including blends designed to imitate cut stone. They are strong enough for vehicle traffic in the right thickness, and individual units can be lifted and reset or replaced.
The main criticism is colour fade over many years of sun, which is real but gradual, and less noticeable on blended colours than on single strong tones.
Clay brick pavers
Clay brick is coloured all the way through by the firing process, so it does not fade the way pigmented concrete can. Brick patios often look better at twenty years than at two.
The palette is narrow — reds, browns, buffs — and the sizes are limited, which restricts pattern options. It suits traditional and brick-faced houses particularly well, and looks out of place against some contemporary elevations.
It is typically more expensive per unit than concrete and slightly more demanding to lay, since brick sizes vary a little more between production runs.
Natural stone
Flagstone, bluestone and travertine are the common choices here. Nothing else looks quite like them, and on the right house the difference is obvious.
The cost driver is labour. Irregular flagstone is fitted piece by piece; even dimensional stone needs more care because thickness varies and each piece has to be bedded individually to sit flush.
Stone is also more variable underfoot — a beautiful irregular flagstone patio is a slightly uneven surface, which matters if furniture has to sit level or someone in the household is unsteady.
Travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot in summer, which is why it is common around pools.
How each weathers in a humid Southern climate
Humidity and shade produce organic growth on every material here. Moss and algae are a maintenance issue on all three, and they are driven by shade and moisture rather than by what the patio is made of.
Freeze-thaw cycling is mild in this region compared with further north, but it still works on saturated materials. Anything porous benefits from draining properly rather than holding water.
Concrete and brick handle pressure washing at sensible pressure; some natural stone does not, and soft stone can be permanently marked by an aggressive nozzle.
None of these weather badly if the base drains. Most patio problems blamed on material are base and drainage problems.
Matching material to the house rather than the trend
The reliable approach is to draw the colour from something already on the building — the brick, the stone base course, the roof — rather than choosing in isolation at a showroom.
Sample properly. Take units home, lay them out where the patio will go, and look at them wet, dry, in morning light and at dusk. Colour under showroom lighting is not colour in your backyard.
And consider repairability. Concrete and brick pavers can be lifted and replaced individually; a poured slab or a mortared stone patio cannot.
