Paver Patio vs Concrete Patio: What Lake Norman Homeowners Should Know

Both build a good patio. The difference shows up in how each one ages on Carolina clay, and in what happens when something needs to be fixed.

How each one handles our soil

Clay expands and contracts with moisture, which is exactly the movement that cracks a concrete slab. Pavers sit on a flexible compacted base, so the same ground movement gets absorbed across thousands of small joints instead of splitting one large surface.

Poured concrete can absolutely perform here — with a proper base, correct thickness, reinforcement and control joints — but cracking is a question of when, not if, and the crack is permanent.

Repairs and utilities

A paver patio can be opened and put back. If a section settles, a root lifts an area, or an irrigation line under it needs work, we lift the pavers, correct the base and reset the same stone with no visible patch. A concrete repair is a patch, and it always looks like one.

Cost and appearance

Poured concrete usually costs less up front. Pavers cost more initially and offer far more in color, pattern, borders and the ability to tie into steps, walls and fire features cleanly.

Plain broom-finish concrete reads as utility. A paver patio with a soldier-course border generally does more for the look and resale appeal of an outdoor living space.

Drainage is the deciding factor

Whichever you pick, the patio must shed water away from the house — typically around a quarter inch of fall per foot — and the base must be compacted in lifts. Most patio failures we are called out to are base and drainage failures, not material failures.
