A fire pit is centred and open. People sit in a circle, everyone faces in, and conversation works in every direction. It needs clear space all around it.
A fireplace is a wall. It anchors one edge of a patio, gives a backdrop and some wind shelter, and seating faces one way in a semicircle.
On a small patio, a fireplace can eat the usable area; on a large one, it gives the space a focal point and a sense of enclosure.
If the yard has a view over the water or down a slope, a fireplace placed badly blocks it. A pit rarely does.
Construction and cost
A fire pit is a modest structure: a footing or compacted base, block or stone, and a fire-rated liner.
A fireplace is a masonry structure with a real footing below grade, a firebox, a flue and a chimney that has to draw properly. It is closer to building a small piece of the house.
That difference is the main reason a fireplace typically costs several times what a comparable pit costs.
Both need the patio base under them designed for the load, which is why they should be planned before paving rather than added later.
Smoke, wind and comfort
A fire pit sends smoke wherever the wind takes it, so someone is always moving their chair. Gas removes the problem entirely.
A fireplace pulls smoke up the flue when built and sited correctly, which makes it far more pleasant close in.
A fireplace also blocks wind and reflects heat forward, extending the season more effectively than an open pit.
Check HOA rules and any local restrictions before committing to a wood-burning feature.

Small patio, open views, casual gatherings, tighter budget: fire pit.
Large patio, need for a focal point or screening from a neighbour, frequent cool-weather use: fireplace.

Can either be added to an existing patio?
Sometimes. Both need adequate bearing beneath them, so the existing base has to be checked or opened up — which is why planning them into the original build is cheaper.
