A sump pump moves water out of the house. If the discharge lands ten feet from the foundation, that same water finds its way back in — and the pump runs forever.
The recirculation problem
Water discharged close to the house soaks into the same soil the pump is emptying, and returns to the sump. The pump cycles constantly and wears out early.
The fix is distance and fall: get the water well away from the foundation and somewhere it can leave the property or soak away safely.
Discharging onto ground that slopes back toward the house achieves nothing at all.
A pump that runs during dry weather is a strong sign of recirculation or groundwater intrusion worth investigating.
Where the water should go
A buried solid pipe running to a daylight outlet on a lower part of the property is the cleanest solution where grade allows.
A pop-up emitter works where there is no bank to daylight into, releasing water at the surface away from the house.
A dry well can accept discharge where no gravity outlet exists, sized for the volume and sited well away from the foundation.
Never discharge toward a neighbouring property, and check local rules before connecting to any public system.
What not to do
Do not tie sump discharge into a perimeter French drain that returns water to the same area — it becomes a loop.
Do not run it into a septic system.
Do not use perforated pipe for the discharge run; it should be solid so the water actually travels.
Do not leave a corrugated hose lying across the lawn. It gets mown, kicked, crushed and eventually ignored.
Freeze, maintenance and capacity
Piedmont winters are mild but do freeze. Buried lines should have continuous fall so they drain, and outlets should be kept clear of ice and debris.
Fit an animal guard on the outlet and check it seasonally — a blocked outlet backs the whole line up.
Consider what happens in a power cut during a storm, when the pump is most needed.
