Outdoor Lighting Ideas That Boost Curb Appeal

Lighting is the cheapest way to change how a house looks at night, and the only landscape improvement that works entirely after dark.

Start with the architecture

Pick two or three features worth lighting: a gable, a chimney, a stone column, a porch. Not the whole facade.

Graze textured surfaces — stone, brick, board and batten — with a fixture close to the wall aimed up along it.

Keep the fixtures out of sight behind planting or recessed in beds.

Balance left and right. Asymmetric lighting on a symmetrical house reads as a mistake.

Trees and planting

Uplighting a specimen tree in the front yard is the single highest-impact move on most properties.

Two or three fixtures around a large tree, at different distances, gives depth instead of a flat silhouette.

Light a few plants, not every plant. Contrast between lit and unlit is what makes it look intentional.

Consider what the effect looks like from inside the house too, not just from the street.

Entry, walkway and driveway

The front door should be the brightest point in the composition — it is where the eye should land.

Light the walk with staggered, modest path lights or with down lighting from a tree above.

Define the driveway edge subtly — low lights or bollards at the entrance, not a full runway.

What to avoid

Glare. If you can see the bulb from the street or the front door, the fixture needs shielding or reaiming.

Mixed colour temperatures across the front of the house.

Solar path lights in a row as the whole scheme — inconsistent output and a short life.

Overlighting. Restraint reads as expensive; brightness reads as security lighting.
