Low-voltage lighting is the standard for residential landscapes because it is safe to work around, flexible to extend, and — done well — almost invisible during the day.
How the system works
A transformer steps household power down to low voltage, typically twelve volts, and feeds buried cable running out to the fixtures.
Because the voltage is low, the cable can be buried shallowly and fixtures can be moved and added as planting matures.
The transformer is sized to the total wattage of the fixtures, with headroom left for future additions.
Timers, photocells or smart controllers handle switching.
Cable, voltage drop and why installs fail
Voltage drops along the cable run. Fixtures at the far end of a long run get less power and read dimmer and warmer in colour.
The fix is correct cable gauge and a sensible wiring layout — hub and spoke, or a loop — rather than one long daisy chain.
Connections are the other failure point. Waterproof, corrosion-resistant connectors are essential; twist caps buried in wet Piedmont clay fail.
LED fixtures draw far less, which reduces drop and allows more fixtures per transformer than older halogen systems.

Is low-voltage lighting safe to install around plants and children?
It is the residential standard precisely because the voltage is low. Installation still needs correct cable, connections and a properly sized transformer.
Why are some of my lights dimmer than others?

Can I add fixtures later?
