A screen that works in July and disappears in January is not a screen. Year-round privacy comes from evergreen structure, and the best versions of it mix species and heights rather than planting one long row of the same thing.
Why mixed screens beat monocultures
A single-species row is one pest or disease away from a gap that takes years to fill. Mixed planting spreads that risk.
Mixed screens also look better. Varied texture and colour reads as landscape rather than as a green wall.
Practically, different species handle different parts of a run — sun at one end, shade under a canopy at the other, wet ground in the middle.
Layering for real depth
Back layer: tall evergreens for height and mass — Green Giant, Nellie Stevens holly, cryptomeria, American holly.
Middle layer: dense shrubs to hold the screen at eye level — laurel, wax myrtle, viburnum, tea olive for fragrance.
Front layer: lower shrubs and grasses to finish the bed and keep the base of the screen from looking bare.
Two layers do most of the work of three, and a layered bed also gives a screen somewhere to go if one plant is lost.
Winter density and siting
Judge candidate plants in winter, not in a nursery in May. Some evergreens thin noticeably in cold weather or open up at the base as they mature.
Screening is about sight lines from where you actually sit. Standing at the patio and looking at what you want blocked usually shows the screen only needs to be in two places, not all the way around the lot.
Height needed drops sharply as the screen moves closer to the viewer. A shorter screen near the patio can do what a very tall one at the property line would have to.
Beds, drainage and upkeep
Screens planted into a prepared, mulched bed outperform screens planted into holes in a lawn — no mower damage, less competition, and better soil.
On clay, raise the bed and make sure water is not running along the row. Evergreens sitting in wet ground decline slowly and expensively.
Prune to maintain density rather than shearing to a shape. Shearing a screen tightly year after year is what creates thin, woody interiors.

How tall do evergreens need to be for privacy?
Less than most people assume, if planted close to the seating area rather than at the property line. Sight lines, not fence height, set the requirement.
Are Leyland cypress a good choice here?
They grow fast but are prone to disease and storm damage in the Piedmont, and a failure leaves a large gap. Green Giant and hollies are the more durable choices.
Can I get privacy without a solid row of trees?
Yes. A layered bed with a few well-placed evergreens often blocks the view you care about while looking far better than a hedge.
