Why the Answer Depends More on Start Size Than Species
Growth rate matters, but start size matters more in the early years. A 4-foot Green Giant and a 6-foot Green Giant of the same age will show different results in year two — not because of genetics, but because the larger plant had more established root mass at installation and rebounded faster from transplant stress. The growth rate advertised for a species assumes it's established and growing actively, not recovering from being dug, transported, and replanted.
Year-by-Year Realistic Expectations
Year 1 (installation year): Most privacy trees spend their first growing season establishing root systems rather than putting on significant height. Expect minimal visible growth — 6 inches to 1 foot in a good year. This is normal and not a sign of a problem.
Year 2: Root systems are establishing. Growth accelerates. Green Giants typically put on 18–30 inches. Skip laurels 12–18 inches. Leyland cypress 24–36 inches. The hedge is starting to look intentional but doesn't provide true privacy yet at most starting sizes.
Year 3: This is where fast-growing species show their speed. Green Giants planted at 6 feet are often 10–12 feet by end of year three. At this point, most privacy screens provide meaningful visual separation.
Year 5: A well-established Green Giant planted at 6 feet is typically 15–20 feet tall by year five — providing complete visual screening in most situations. Skip laurels at the same starting point are 12–15 feet and dense.
What Speeds Up Establishment
Installation timing (fall is best), consistent establishment watering in the first year, proper soil amendment at installation, and correct spacing. Proper installation matters far more than species selection for year-one survival and year-two acceleration.
What Slows It Down
Summer installation without irrigation support, planting in waterlogged clay without drainage correction, and over-spacing that creates wind exposure between plants in the screen's early years. Don't plant 10 feet apart to save money upfront — you'll either wait 6 years for a screen or spend more replanting in between.
