Designs get drawn to what can actually be built
A designer who also installs knows what a given slope costs to hold, whether a machine can reach the back yard, and where the base depth will need to increase.
That knowledge changes the plan while changes are still free — on paper rather than mid-excavation.
It also keeps the drawing honest about drainage. A beautiful plan that ignores where the water goes is the most expensive kind of plan on a Piedmont clay lot.
Sequencing and buried work
Order matters: grading, utilities and sleeving, drainage, base, hardscape, irrigation, lighting, planting, lawn.
Under one contract that order is planned once. Across several contractors it is negotiated repeatedly, and the usual casualty is something buried — a lighting cable, an irrigation sleeve, a drain line — that gets installed after the paving instead of before it.
Retrofitting buried work into finished hardscape is where budgets get eaten.
What to ask either way
Who is responsible if water still stands after the work is done? What base depth and materials are specified? Who holds the schedule between trades? What is in writing about warranty on workmanship?
A clear written scope answers most of these before a shovel moves.

Yes. We will review it for buildability and drainage and tell you plainly where it needs adjusting before pricing the build.
Do I need a design at all for a small project?
For a single patio or drain, a clear scope and a layout on site is usually enough. Whole-yard projects benefit from a plan.
