What cover actually buys you

Construction, cost and approvals
A covered patio is a structure: footings below grade, posts, framing, roofing and often gutters and downspouts of its own.
That means permits and inspections in most jurisdictions, plus HOA architectural review in most Lake Norman neighbourhoods.
Cost is a large multiple of the same patio left open, and attaching a roof to the house involves flashing and tie-in detail that has to be done right.
Roof water has to be collected and piped away, or you have created a new drainage problem at the patio edge.
A practical middle path
Cover the part you use in all weather — dining and kitchen — and leave the fire and lounge area open.
Build the footings for a future structure during the patio build even if the roof comes later. Retrofitting footings through finished paving is expensive.
Sleeve for power, lighting and any fan or heater while the base is open.

Will a covered patio make my house darker?
Usually yes to some degree, especially on south and west elevations. A pergola, louvred roof or partial cover reduces the effect.
Do I need a permit for a covered patio?
Roofed structures on footings generally require permitting, and requirements vary by jurisdiction. Check with your county or town and your HOA before designing.
Can a roof be added to an existing patio?
Only if footings can be installed to bear the posts, which usually means cutting into the existing surface. Planning ahead avoids that.
