Sod itself is the predictable part of the price. What varies is everything that has to happen to the ground before it goes down.
Area and grass type
Sod is sold by area, and different varieties carry different prices and availability.
Warm-season varieties suit full sun here; shaded areas need different choices and sometimes are not suitable for sod at all.
Irregular shapes and narrow strips increase waste and cutting labour.
Preparation is the real variable
Removing existing lawn or weeds, and disposing of it, is labour plus haul-off.
Grading to a smooth, correct surface with fall away from the house.
Breaking up compacted clay and adding topsoil or amendment — the step most often skipped, and the reason sod fails to root.
Any drainage correction needed, since sod will not survive in a wet low spot.
Site conditions
Access for delivery. Pallets are heavy, and if they cannot be placed near the work, everything is barrowed.
Slope slows installation and may need staking or matting.
Trees and roots mean hand work and often mean that area should not be sod at all.
Watering and establishment
New sod needs frequent, reliable water for the first weeks. Without irrigation, a temporary system or committed hand watering is essential and should be part of the plan.
Where no irrigation exists, installing at least a basic system for the lawn area is often cheaper than replacing failed sod.
Timing matters: laying warm-season sod in the wrong season increases risk.

Frequently asked questions
Is sod much more expensive than seed?
Up front, yes. Sod buys an instant, established lawn and avoids the erosion and weed problems of a long germination period.
Can sod be laid over existing grass?
It should not be. The old lawn must come out and the ground be prepared, or the new sod roots poorly.
What makes new sod fail?
Insufficient water in the first weeks, and laying it over compacted or poorly drained ground.
