Lake Norman winters are mild by most standards but not without consequence for landscapes. Here's what needs attention December through February — and what can safely wait until spring.
What Lake Norman Winters Actually Do to Landscapes
Winter in Lake Norman — roughly December through mid-February — brings temperature swings between freezing and 50s, occasional ice events rather than significant snow, periodic heavy rain, and soil conditions that alternate between frozen and saturated. The temperature swings and freeze-thaw cycles are harder on certain plants and hardscape than sustained cold would be.
What Needs Attention in Winter
Drainage systems after ice events. Ice can block pop-up emitters and channel drain outlets — a blocked outlet prevents drainage from functioning and water backs up. After significant ice events, confirm drainage outlets are clear and functioning.
Newly planted trees and shrubs. Plants installed in fall should have adequate mulch cover — 3 inches over the root zone — to moderate soil temperature through freeze-thaw cycles. Check that mulch hasn't shifted or been displaced and that it remains pulled back from stems and trunks.
Retaining wall drainage outlets. Confirm weep holes and drain pipe outlets aren't blocked by frozen material or accumulated debris heading into the wet season.
Irrigation system. If winterization was properly completed, no winter action needed. If you're not certain winterization was done correctly, run a visual check on any exposed pipe or backflow preventer for frost damage.
What Can Wait Until Spring
Pruning of most shrubs (except for removing dead or ice-damaged material — do that immediately). Fertilizing. Aerating. Spring-blooming plants in bud — don't prune these in winter. Most ornamental grass cutting — wait until late February or early March just before new growth begins.
