Patio Drainage Problems in Lake Norman: Why Water Runs the Wrong Way (And How to Fix It)

Water pooling on or around a patio is almost always a grading or installation problem — not a rainfall problem. Here's how to diagnose it and what the fix actually involves.

Why Patios Collect Water

A patio that holds water wasn't graded correctly during installation, has settled unevenly over time, or is surrounded by grade that directs water onto it rather than away. In Lake Norman's clay soil, slight settlement is common in the first 1–3 years after installation — and even a fraction of an inch in the wrong direction creates a low spot that collects water every time it rains.

The Right Slope

A patio surface should slope away from the house at a minimum of 1/8 inch per foot — ideally 1/4 inch per foot — in all directions where water needs to exit. On a 20-foot patio, that's 2.5–5 inches of fall across the surface. Subtle enough that you won't notice it visually, but enough to move water off within minutes of rain stopping.

Fixing an Existing Problem

Paver patios are the most fixable. Individual pavers can be lifted, the base re-leveled and re-sloped, and the pavers reinstalled — often in a day without replacing material.

Concrete patios are harder. Minor slope correction can sometimes be done with mudjacking, but significant drainage correction usually requires saw-cutting and replacing sections.

If surrounding grade is the problem — regrading the adjacent landscape or adding a channel drain at the patio perimeter is often the most cost-effective fix. A drainage consultation identifies which issue you're dealing with before money is spent on the wrong solution.
