Bed edging keeps mulch in, grass out, and gives planting beds a finished appearance. Here's how the most common edging materials perform in Lake Norman's climate over time.
Why Bed Edging Matters
Without defined bed edging, grass creeps into planting beds from the lawn side and mulch migrates onto the lawn during rain events. The result is an undefined border that requires constant re-edging with a spade to maintain. Good bed edging creates a physical barrier that reduces both of these maintenance tasks.
Steel or Aluminum Edging
Metal edging — either painted steel or aluminum — is the most durable and cleanest-looking option for curved or straight bed edges. Properly installed (driven below grade with a stake every 12–18 inches), metal edging holds its position in Lake Norman's freeze-thaw conditions, accommodates gentle curves without visible segments, and lasts 15–20+ years without needing replacement. It's the professional landscape contractor's default for a reason.
The failure mode is inadequate staking — metal edging that shifts position or leans outward was under-staked at installation.
Concrete Edging (Poured or Extruded)
Poured or machine-extruded concrete edging is permanent and holds position well, but cracks in Lake Norman's clay soils over time as the ground moves. Once cracked, it's difficult to repair cleanly and difficult to remove without excavation. Best suited for straight edges adjacent to hardscape rather than curved beds in lawn areas.
Plastic Edging
Plastic edging is inexpensive and easy to install but performs poorly in Lake Norman over time. UV exposure makes it brittle within 3–5 years. It buckles, shifts position, and degrades visually. It's the lowest-cost option and delivers accordingly.
Paver or Stone Edging
A row of bricks, pavers, or natural stone set at grade creates a permanent, maintenance-free bed edge that also provides a mowing guide. More expensive than metal edging, but it doubles as a design element and never needs replacement. Good choice for formal beds adjacent to hardscape or entry areas where appearance is a priority.
