What a Zone Actually Is
An irrigation zone is a group of heads or drip emitters connected to the same valve — they all run simultaneously when that valve opens. Zone count determines how many areas can be watered independently, which is important because different areas of a property have different water requirements.
Why Zone Count Matters for Performance
A system with too few zones groups areas with different needs on the same schedule. Lawn in full sun runs with lawn in deep shade. Drip beds for shrubs run with spray heads for turf. The result is one area getting exactly what it needs while another is consistently over or underwatered — and over time, that shows as turf stress, plant decline, or waterlogged beds.
Typical Zone Count for Lake Norman Properties
A standard 1/4-acre Lake Norman lot with a mix of lawn, foundation beds, and a few specialty areas typically needs 6–10 zones: 3–5 lawn zones (rotary heads, often broken into front, back, and side areas), 1–2 foundation bed zones (spray or drip), 1 drip zone for trees and larger shrubs, and 1 supplemental zone for any vegetable or specialty garden area.
Larger lots, lots with significant elevation change, or properties with extensive planting beds run more zones. The important principle is that each zone should be designed around one plant type, one head type, and one sun/shade condition — not around convenience or cost minimization.
Water Pressure and Flow Rate
Zone count is also constrained by your home's water pressure and available flow rate. Running too many heads simultaneously in a single zone reduces pressure and produces poor spray coverage. The right zone count for your property is the number that allows every area to receive the right amount of water on an appropriate schedule — not the minimum number that reduces upfront cost. An undersized system costs more in plant replacement and water waste than the zone savings are worth.
