Most Lake Norman irrigation controllers run the same schedule year-round. They shouldn't. Here's how to adjust your controller seasonally for efficient, effective watering.
Why One Schedule Doesn't Work Year-Round
Lake Norman's climate varies significantly across the year in ways that affect how much irrigation your property actually needs. Summer brings heat, high evapotranspiration rates, and periods of drought. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, higher natural rainfall, and lower plant water demand. Running the same schedule year-round either overwaters in spring and fall (wasting water and stressing plants) or underwaters in summer (drought stress and die-back).
The Four Seasonal Adjustments
Spring (March–May): Start conservatively. Turf is greening up and plants are emerging, but temperatures are moderate and rainfall is typically adequate. A starting schedule of 2 days per week, 10–12 minutes per turf zone, is a reasonable spring baseline. Adjust based on actual rainfall — if it rains meaningfully, skip the scheduled run.
Early summer (June): Increase frequency and duration as temperatures rise. 3 days per week, 15–18 minutes per turf zone, is a reasonable starting point. Water in the early morning (4–7 AM) to minimize evaporation loss and reduce foliar disease pressure.
Peak summer (July–August): Maximum frequency — 4–5 days per week for turf zones in full sun during dry stretches. Deep, less frequent watering (longer run times, fewer days) is better than daily light watering — it encourages deeper root development.
Fall (September–November): Step back down as temperatures drop. Reduce to spring schedule levels or less. Warm-season grasses going dormant need no irrigation. Fescue overseeding needs consistent moisture but not high volume — shorter, more frequent runs support germination.
