What Pool Excavation Does to Your Yard
Installing an in-ground pool requires significant excavation — typically 8–10 feet deep — and removal of a large soil volume. How that soil is managed, and what happens to surrounding grade after installation, determines whether the pool area drains properly or becomes a maintenance headache. Pool contractors focus on the pool shell, equipment, and finish — not the surrounding landscape. Most pool contracts include basic backfill and a deck but not drainage from that deck to a safe outlet, grade restoration of the surrounding yard, or retaining walls to manage elevation changes the excavation created.
Drainage Problems That Develop After Pool Installation
Deck runoff with no outlet. A pool deck that drains toward the house foundation or into a yard low spot creates a drainage problem every time it rains. Decks should drain to channel drains connecting to underground pipe with a daylight outlet.
Soil settlement and grade reversal. Backfill around the pool settles — sometimes significantly — in the first 1–3 years. Settlement that drops the surrounding grade can direct water toward pool equipment, the house, or into neighboring yards. This is one of the most common post-pool drainage issues we address.
Unaddressed elevation changes. In Lake Norman's sloped lots, pool excavation often creates a significant elevation change on the downhill side. Without a retaining wall, the slope becomes unstable and erodes over time.
