These two get used interchangeably, and they do completely different jobs. A French drain collects water spread through the soil along a line. A catch basin collects water pooling at a point on the surface.
What a French drain does
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with perforated pipe wrapped in filter fabric. Water in the soil finds the gravel, enters the pipe and gets carried to an outlet. It works along a length, which makes it the right tool for a soggy strip at the base of a slope, a wet side yard or water tracking toward a foundation.
What a catch basin does
A catch basin is a box set flush with the ground, fed by solid pipe. Surface water runs into the grate and out to daylight. It works at a point, so it is right for a defined low spot, a patio edge, a driveway apron or the bottom of a downspout run.
Choosing between them
Look at how the water shows up. If the ground is spongy over a wide area and squishes underfoot, that is subsurface water and calls for a French drain. If you can see a puddle in the same spot every storm and the ground around it is firm, that is surface water and calls for a basin.
Plenty of Lake Norman yards need both: basins to grab surface water at the low points, tied into a single solid outlet line, plus a French drain across the uphill side to cut off water before it reaches the lawn.
What ruins either one
No outlet, not enough fall, no filter fabric, and the wrong stone. Fine soil migrating into unwrapped gravel silts a French drain within a couple of seasons. Basins with no maintenance access clog with leaves and mulch and back up into the lawn.
