Foundation plantings define the appearance of a home more than almost any other landscape element. Most Lake Norman homes have them wrong. Here's how to get them right.
The Most Common Foundation Planting Mistake
Planting shrubs that are sized for appearance at installation rather than at maturity. A 3-gallon boxwood looks appropriately sized in front of a 30-inch-tall foundation — for 3 years. At 10 years, it's covering the window. At 20 years, it's covering the siding. Most foundation beds in established Lake Norman neighborhoods are dominated by shrubs that have outgrown their space, blocking light and views, and requiring aggressive pruning that creates unattractive stubs.
Scale for Mature Size, Not Current Size
The standard guidance for foundation plantings is: height at maturity should not exceed 2/3 of the first-floor window sill height. For a home with window sills at 3 feet, foundation shrubs should mature to 24 inches maximum — not 24 inches now, 24 inches at full maturity. This means selecting genuinely dwarf varieties of compact species rather than compact varieties of large species.
Right Plants for Lake Norman Foundation Beds
In Lake Norman's clay soils and mixed sun/shade conditions typical of north-facing and east-facing foundations: dwarf English boxwood or Korean boxwood (slow-growing, stays compact), nandina (heavenly bamboo — evergreen, multi-season interest, naturally compact varieties available), dwarf crape myrtle (full-sun foundations, multi-season interest), and oakleaf hydrangea (shaded foundations, native, showy).
Avoid: standard holly and barberry varieties (get large quickly), junipers (look dated and get massive), and standard-size boxwoods unless you're committed to annual shearing to maintain size.
Spacing
Space for mature size plus 12 inches. A shrub that matures to 30 inches wide needs 30 inches of center-to-center spacing from its neighbor. The bed looks sparse for the first 2–3 years — that's correct. Fill with perennials or ground cover if the visual gap bothers you; remove them as the shrubs expand.
