Install trees, shrubs, and privacy screening. September through mid-October is the best planting window in Lake Norman. Plants establish through fall and winter rather than facing summer heat immediately after installation.
September — Plant and Prepare
Overseed fescue lawns. Tall fescue should be overseeded in late September through October, once nighttime temperatures drop below 65°F consistently. The soil is still warm enough for germination, and the cooler air temperatures favor cool-season grass establishment.
Aerate and topdress lawn areas. Core aeration and topdressing with compost improves soil structure, reduces compaction from summer traffic, and prepares the lawn for overseeding and winter. Fall is the ideal time.
October — Maintain and Winterize Irrigation
Winterize irrigation systems. Irrigation winterization in Lake Norman happens mid-October through November — before the first hard freeze but after the lawn has stopped growing actively. Blow out all water from the system to prevent pipe and head damage.
Plant spring-blooming bulbs. Tulips, daffodils, alliums — October is the window for fall bulb planting. They need a cold period to bloom, and planting in fall gives them that naturally.
Refresh mulch in planting beds. A 3-inch mulch layer before temperatures drop protects root zones through winter. Pull mulch back from plant stems and tree trunks.
November — Final Prep
Cut back perennials selectively. Leave seed heads that provide winter interest and bird forage. Cut back anything that is diseased or that was showing pest pressure — don't let that material overwinter in the bed.
Walk the property for drainage issues. Early November, before leaves have fully fallen, is a good time to walk your yard and note where water collects, where erosion channels have formed, and where grade corrections may be needed. Addressing these before they get worse through a wet winter is far less expensive than repairing them in spring.
Apply pre-emergent to warm-season lawns. Bermuda and Zoysia lawns benefit from a fall pre-emergent application that suppresses winter annual weeds.
