When to Call a Drainage Contractor vs Just Regrading Your Yard

Regrading is usually enough when…

The problem is shape, not volume. If water sits in a shallow bowl, if the ground next to the house is flat or pitched inward, or if a former flower bed left a depression, reshaping the surface so water runs continuously to a lower point solves it without a drain system.

You need a drainage system when…

Regrading alone will not carry the day if any of these are true:

• There is no downhill path across the surface to an outlet.
• Water is arriving from an uphill lot or street in volume.
• The wet area is between structures — house, walk, driveway — with no room to reshape.
• The ground is saturated below the surface, not just puddled on it.
• Roof water needs to be carried well away from the foundation.

The combination that usually wins

On most Lake Norman lots the right answer is both: regrade to establish positive fall away from the house, then add downspout lines and one or two basins to handle the volume the surface cannot move. Grading determines where water goes; pipe handles what grading cannot.

Questions to ask any contractor

Where does the water leave the property? What is the fall from the problem area to that outlet? Why this fix instead of the alternative? A contractor who cannot answer the outlet question has not diagnosed the site.
