What a Channel Drain Is
A channel drain (also called a trench drain or slot drain) is a linear drainage structure — a long, narrow inlet that collects water across its entire length rather than at a single point. The grate runs flush with the surface, and water enters through slots or a mesh grate along the entire run of the channel. Below the grate is a formed channel that collects water and routes it to an outlet pipe at one end.
Where Channel Drains Work Best
Across driveways at the apron. A channel drain installed across the driveway where it meets the street or garage apron intercepts all surface water flowing down the driveway before it enters the garage or street. This is the most common residential channel drain application in Lake Norman and one of the most effective.
At pool deck edges. A channel drain at the pool deck perimeter captures water sheeting off the deck and routes it away from the pool equipment and foundation. Properly installed pool deck channel drains eliminate the runoff problem that affects most pool areas.
At patio or threshold edges. Where a patio meets a door threshold or grade change, a channel drain prevents water from sheeting against the house or backing up at the door.
Where Channel Drains Fail
Channel drains need an outlet — a pipe that carries collected water to a lower elevation or discharge point. A channel drain installed with no functional outlet just fills up during heavy rain and overflows. The outlet pipe needs adequate slope and a discharge point that can handle the collected volume.
Channel drains also require maintenance — debris accumulates in the channel and needs periodic cleaning. Neglected channel drains fill with sediment and stop functioning within a few years.
Channel drains come in different widths and depths that determine flow capacity. An undersized channel drain installed in a driveway that receives significant roof runoff in addition to surface water will overflow in heavy rain events.
