Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs in Lake Norman — and most homeowners plant in spring. Here's why the timing matters and when to schedule your installation.
Why Fall Is the Best Planting Season
September through November is the optimal window for planting trees and shrubs in Lake Norman. Air temperatures are cooling — reducing transplant stress — but soil temperatures are still warm enough to encourage root growth. The result is a plant that spends its first winter establishing roots rather than fighting heat and drought.
Spring planting puts newly installed plants immediately into the most stressful period — escalating heat, inconsistent rainfall, and the energy demand of new leaf production all at once, before the root system has established. Fall plantings consistently outperform spring plantings in survival rate and first-year growth.
The Planting Windows
Best window: Mid-September through mid-November. Root establishment happens through fall and early winter — plants are ready to take off in spring.
Good window: Late February through late March. Early spring before significant heat. Better than late spring but requires consistent summer irrigation.
Avoid: June through August. Heat stress, high water demand, and limited root establishment make summer planting the hardest. If you must plant in summer, plan for daily irrigation for the first several weeks.
Fall installation of privacy screening means trees establish over winter and give you meaningful growth starting the following spring — a full season ahead of a spring install.
What Affects Establishment
Tree size matters. A 6-foot Green Giant planted in fall establishes faster proportionally than a 12-foot specimen — smaller trees often catch up within 2–3 growing seasons. Soil conditions matter more than timing: a tree planted into poorly drained clay without amendment will struggle regardless of calendar date.
