Landscape renovation looks messy during the work phase. Here's what the process looks like week by week — and what the realistic timeline from start to finish is for a Lake Norman property.
What "Before" Usually Looks Like
The typical Lake Norman landscape renovation project starts with: overgrown foundation shrubs that have grown beyond their intended space, a drainage problem that's been tolerated for years, dated planting that doesn't suit current lifestyle or HOA requirements, or hardscape that's settled or cracked past the point of maintenance. The "before" condition usually got there gradually — things that were manageable 5 years ago became problematic as they continued to change.
Week 1 — Removal and Demo
The most visually jarring phase. Existing plants come out, old edging and any hardscape being replaced is removed, and the property often looks worse than when it started. This is normal. Material gets hauled away, grade is assessed, and drainage issues that were hidden under vegetation become visible and can be properly addressed.
Week 2 — Infrastructure
Drainage corrections happen before anything else goes back in. Grade adjustments, drain installation, downspout routing. This phase is invisible when it's done but determines whether everything else performs correctly. It's also the phase that generates the most "is this going to be done soon?" anxiety from homeowners who can see the work in progress.
Week 3 — Hardscape (If Applicable)
New edging, walkways, steps, seating walls, or patio — if the renovation includes hardscape, this is when it's built. Base preparation takes more time than surface installation.
Week 4 — Planting and Finish
New plants go in — bed prep, amending, installation, mulch. The property often looks spare immediately after planting because plants are spaced for mature size, not current size. This is correct. Plants fill in over 2–3 growing seasons.
The Reality of "Done"
A landscape renovation is "done" in weeks but not "complete" for 2–3 years as plants fill in, establish, and the bed reaches its designed density. Managing expectations about this timeline prevents disappointment in the first season and sets up correct evaluation of whether the project is succeeding.
