Backflow is the reverse flow of water from your irrigation system into your home's potable water supply. Under normal conditions, municipal water pressure keeps water flowing in one direction — from the supply into your system. When pressure drops suddenly (a water main break, heavy municipal demand, or a sudden valve closure), that pressure differential can reverse, drawing irrigation water — which contacts fertilizers, pesticides, and soil — back into the drinking water line.
What Backflow Is and Why It Matters
A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed on the irrigation supply line that allows water to flow in only one direction. Even if pressure reverses, the preventer closes and prevents contaminated water from entering the potable supply.
What NC and Local Municipalities Require
North Carolina plumbing code requires backflow prevention on irrigation systems connected to a public water supply. Most municipalities in the Lake Norman area — including those in Mecklenburg, Iredell, and Lincoln counties — require an annual inspection of the backflow preventer by a certified tester. The test confirms the device is operating correctly and the results are filed with the water utility.
Homeowners who skip annual testing risk a notice from their water utility and, in some cases, water service interruption until compliance is confirmed.
Types of Backflow Preventers
The two most common types for residential irrigation in Lake Norman are the pressure vacuum breaker (PVB) — installed above grade at the point of connection, most common for residential systems — and the reduced pressure zone (RPZ) backflow preventer, which provides higher protection and is required in some commercial and high-hazard applications.
Annual backflow testing typically costs $50–$100 and takes about 30 minutes. If your system doesn't have a backflow preventer, or if you're unsure whether yours has been tested recently, it's worth confirming before the next irrigation season starts.
