Plants established under a tree's canopy — shade-tolerant shrubs, ground covers, hostas — are adapted to those conditions. When the tree is removed, those plants suddenly face full sun exposure they weren't established for. Some will adapt; many will decline. ## Light Changes Before removing a significant tree, walk the area and identify what's growing in the shade zone. Plan to manage those plants — provide temporary shade cloth, replace them with sun-tolerant alternatives, or accept that some will need replacement. ## Turf Opportunities Many Lake Norman homeowners discover the best turf improvement opportunity after removing a struggling tree whose canopy prevented adequate sunlight. Full sun exposure creates conditions for robust turf establishment that previously wasn't possible. This is an opportunity to seed or sod with appropriate species for the newly sunny conditions. ## Root System Decomposition The stump and root system of a removed tree decompose over 5–15 years, depending on species and conditions. During this period, soil in the root zone settles as organic material decomposes — creating sink holes and grade irregularities if the area is immediately re-planted or hardscaped. Ground level may drop 2–4 inches in the first 3–5 years in the main root zone. Plan for this in grading and planting decisions. ## Drainage Changes Mature trees are significant water consumers — a large oak uses hundreds of gallons of water per week during the growing season. When that tree is removed, that water stays in the soil. Areas that drained adequately with a mature tree present may develop standing water issues without it.
