Something is putting concentrated water on a slope faster than the slope can absorb it. Fix the water first, then stabilize the surface, or you will be regrading the same gully every spring. ## Find the water source Walk the slope uphill from the washout. Nine times out of ten the cause is a downspout discharging above the bank, a driveway or patio shedding sheet flow to one point, or runoff arriving from an uphill lot. Piping roof water past the slope frequently ends the problem on its own. ## Slow it, spread it, hold it The three principles of erosion control on a residential slope are to slow the velocity, spread concentrated flow into sheet flow, and hold the soil surface with roots or cover. Tools we use for that: - Regrading to break one long steep run into gentler pitches. - Terracing with segmental block walls to convert slope into usable level ground. - Erosion control blanket or matting over freshly seeded areas. - Deep-rooted plantings and groundcover instead of turf on steep faces. - Rock-lined swales and level spreaders to disperse concentrated flow. ## Why turf alone fails on a steep bank Fescue roots are shallow, and a steep bank dries out at the top and stays wet at the bottom. Mowing it is unpleasant and often unsafe. Replacing turf on the steepest third with shrubs, ornamental grasses and mulch-stabilized beds usually solves both erosion and maintenance. ## When a wall is the right answer If the slope is too steep to plant safely, or you want flat, usable yard, terracing with properly drained segmental block walls is often less expensive over time than repeatedly repairing washouts. ## Frequently asked questions ### Is straw enough to hold a new seeded slope?
