# Patio Drainage and Slope: Getting the Fall Right

Why patios need slope, which way the fall should run, and what to do when a patio sits lower than the yard around it.

Every patio is built with a deliberate slope away from the house so water sheds off it rather than sitting on it or running back toward the foundation. When that fall is missing, wrong or blocked by the surrounding grade, the patio holds water — and on a paver patio, standing water eventually becomes a base problem.

## Why patios need slope

A patio is a hard surface that produces runoff. Rain that lands on it has to go somewhere, and the only two options are off the surface or into it.

A correctly sloped patio sheds water to a planted area, a lawn, a drain or a swale within moments of the rain stopping. An unsloped or reverse-sloped patio holds puddles, sends water toward the house, or lets it soak into the joints and down into the bedding layer.

On pavers, water entering the base is the mechanism behind most [settlement](/blog/paver-patio-base-preparation). It softens the subgrade, migrates fines, and the surface follows. On concrete, standing water accelerates staining, moss growth and freeze-thaw damage.

## Which way the fall should run

Always away from the house. That is the rule that overrides everything else, because water directed toward a foundation is the most expensive mistake a patio can make.

The fall is gentle — enough to move water reliably, not enough to notice underfoot or to make furniture unstable. A properly graded patio looks flat and drains completely.

Where a patio wraps a corner or sits between the house and a rise in the yard, the fall may need to run in more than one direction, with the water collected at a low point and [taken away in a pipe](/french-drain-installation-lake-norman-nc). That is a design decision made before excavation, not a fix applied afterward.

Check yours with a hose: run water on it and watch where it goes. Where it puddles or drifts toward the house, the slope is wrong.

## When the patio sits lower than the yard

This is common on sloped Lake Norman lots. The patio is cut into the grade, so the yard drains toward it — and no amount of slope on the patio itself solves water arriving from uphill.

The fix is upslope interception. [A swale, a French drain or a channel drain](/drainage-solutions-lake-norman-nc) along the high side catches water before it reaches the paving and carries it around to a safe outlet.

Where the patio sits against a cut face, [a retaining wall with its own drainage system](/blog/how-retaining-wall-drainage-works) handles both the soil and the water behind it.

A patio in a low spot with no outlet is the hardest case, and it usually needs a collection point and a piped run to daylight — or, where there is genuinely no fall available, a pumped solution.

## Where the water goes next

Shedding water off the patio is only half the job. It has to reach somewhere that can take it.

Discharging onto [a lawn that already sits wet](/blog/how-to-fix-a-yard-that-wont-drain) moves the puddle rather than removing it. Discharging toward a neighbour's property creates a different problem. Discharging into a bed with no capacity washes the mulch out.

The right answer is a route to daylight at a genuinely lower point, or into a drainage system sized for the added runoff. Adding a large patio without accounting for the runoff it creates is a frequent cause of new wet spots appearing in a yard that used to be fine.

## Fixing an existing patio that holds water

On pavers, the surface can be lifted, the base regraded and the units relaid — a real repair that restores correct fall without replacing the patio.

On concrete, options are narrower. A localised low spot can sometimes be addressed with a channel drain cut into the slab or by improving the surrounding grade; a slab poured with the wrong fall usually has to be replaced.

In both cases the first question is whether the water is landing on the patio or arriving from elsewhere, because those are different repairs.

Southern Style Turf & Design [does both the hardscaping and the drainage](/hardscaping-lake-norman-nc) across Lake Norman, which means the patio and the water that reaches it get solved together. [Free on-site estimate](/contact).

## Frequently asked questions

### How much slope does a patio need?

A gentle, consistent fall away from the house — enough to shed water reliably without being noticeable underfoot. A well-graded patio looks flat and drains completely after rain.

### Which direction should a patio slope?

Always away from the house. Water directed toward a foundation is the most costly mistake a patio can make.

### Why does my patio hold water?

Either it was built without adequate fall, the surface has settled, or water is arriving from higher ground and the patio has no upslope interception.

### Can a patio that holds water be fixed?

A paver patio can be lifted, the base regraded and the units relaid. A concrete slab poured with the wrong fall usually has to be replaced, though a channel drain or regrading around it sometimes helps.
