A good answer is specific — a named location on your property, lower than the problem area, with a route to get there. A vague answer means the person quoting has not solved your problem yet, and you are being asked to pay for a guess. ## The outlet question that separates real quotes from guesses Every drainage system ends somewhere. That endpoint determines the pipe route, the trench depth, the length of the run, whether machinery can get there, how much restoration is needed and, ultimately, the price. Ask it directly and listen for specifics. 'We'll run it to the low corner behind the shed and daylight it above the tree line' is an answer. 'We'll get it away from the house' is not. Follow it with two more: how much fall do we have to that point, and what happens if we cannot get fall — [do we extend, reshape, or pump](/blog/yard-drainage-flat-lot)? A contractor who has assessed your property will have thought about all three. ## Why a phone quote for drainage is a red flag Photos and descriptions cannot show elevation. Two yards with identical puddles can need completely different systems because one has an outlet forty feet away and the other has none at all. A number given before anyone has walked the property is either padded to cover the unknown or artificially low with the real cost arriving as change orders. Neither is what you want. The site visit is also where the diagnosis happens: whether the water is [surface or subsurface](/blog/catch-basin-vs-french-drain), where the roof water goes, whether irrigation crosses the route, and whether the problem is actually a downspout you could have fixed yourself. ## Questions worth asking Beyond the outlet, these separate contractors who do drainage from contractors who dig trenches. - What is the diagnosis — where is the water coming from, and why is it collecting here? - Are we fixing the roof water first, and if not, why not? - Will the French drain be wrapped in filter fabric, and what pipe are you using — perforated or solid, corrugated or smooth-wall, and where does each begin and end? - Is there a cleanout, and where? - Who locates the irrigation, lighting cable and septic lines before digging? - [Does this project need a permit here](/blog/yard-drainage-permit-nc), and who pulls it? - What restoration is included — sod, seed, mulch, hardscape put back? - Are you insured, and can I see the certificate? ## What should be written into the quote before you sign A drainage quote should be readable by someone who was not at the site visit. If it is one line and a number, ask for more. It should name the discharge point and the route. It should state trench lengths and depths, pipe type and diameter for each section, whether fabric is included, and what the inlets are. It should list what happens to the excavated soil. It should specify restoration — sod or seed, which areas, and what is left as bare soil. It should say what is excluded, which is often as informative as what is included. Change-order terms matter on drainage more than on most work, because rock and unmarked utilities do occasionally appear.
