It compacts well, is relatively stable dimensionally (it doesn't shrink significantly as organic matter decomposes), and is used to build up grade, fill voids, and establish the structural foundation beneath lawn areas and hardscape. ## What Fill Dirt Is Fill dirt is not appropriate as a growing medium. It's dense, low in nutrients, and drains poorly. Plants placed in fill dirt without significant amendment struggle to establish. ## What Topsoil Is Topsoil is the upper layer of native soil — typically the top 4–12 inches — that contains organic matter, soil biology, and the nutrients that support plant growth. Quality topsoil has structure: it aggregates into crumbs, allows root penetration, and holds moisture while still draining. It's the material plants need at the root zone. Topsoil is not appropriate as a structural fill. It contains organic matter that decomposes over time — which causes settlement. A planting bed built entirely from purchased topsoil will settle significantly in the first 1–2 years as that organic matter breaks down. ## The Right Approach for Lake Norman Landscaping For grade correction and raising low areas: fill dirt compacted in lifts, then 4–6 inches of topsoil at the surface. For planting beds on native clay: amend the top 6–8 inches of native soil with compost rather than replacing it with purchased topsoil — this improves structure without creating the settlement issues of a deep topsoil layer. For lawn areas where topsoil was stripped during construction: 2–4 inches of topsoil over compacted fill provides the growing zone turf needs without the settlement risk of a thick topsoil layer. ⚠️ "Topsoil" sold from trucks varies enormously in quality. Some is genuinely good; some is clay subsoil with a misleading label. If purchasing in significant quantities for planting areas, ask to see a soil test or have a small amount tested before using it as a planting medium.
