The difficulty is rarely structural — it is that a new section never quite matches an old one, because the original pavers have weathered and the production run has moved on. The good extensions are the ones designed to look intentional rather than the ones that try and fail to disappear. ## Can it be extended at all? The first question is what the existing patio is sitting on. If [the original base was built properly](/blog/paver-patio-base-preparation), the extension ties into a sound structure and the two sections behave the same way. If the existing patio is settling, rocking or holding water, extending it means building new work against a failing surface — and the new section will make the old one look worse. In that case the honest answer is to rebuild the original as part of the project. On concrete, extending means a new pour against an existing slab. That joint will always be visible and it will move independently, so it is treated as a deliberate control joint rather than something to hide. The grade also matters: an extension that runs downhill has to [keep shedding water away from the house](/blog/patio-drainage-and-slope), which may mean a step down or a small wall rather than a continuous plane. ## Why matching pavers is harder than it sounds Two separate problems. First, manufacturers change and discontinue products. A patio built several years ago may use a unit that is no longer made, or made in a slightly different size or blend. Finding the exact product is sometimes possible and sometimes not. Second, even when the product is identical, the new pavers will not match. The existing ones have weathered — colour has softened, surfaces have picked up patina and dirt. A new unit set beside a ten-year-old one is visibly newer, and it stays that way for a long while. Anyone who promises a seamless match to an aged patio is overpromising. What can be promised is an extension that looks like it was always part of the design. ## Design tricks that make an addition look deliberate Deliberate is the goal, not invisible. - A defined border between old and new — a soldier course or contrasting band that reads as a design line rather than a seam. - A change in level. A step down into the new area separates the two surfaces entirely and often suits the grade anyway. - A different but complementary paver for the new section, chosen to look like an intended second material rather than a failed match. - A planting bed, a low wall or [a seating wall](/blog/seating-walls-and-steps) between the two areas, which gives the transition a purpose. - Zoning by function — the original as dining, the extension as [a fire pit](/blog/fire-pit-placement) or lounge area — so the two read as distinct rooms. - Reusing pavers lifted from the original patio's edge in the new work and putting the new units where the difference matters least. ## Building the extension The new section gets the same base treatment as any new patio: excavation to firm subgrade, compacted aggregate in lifts, bedding layer, edge restraint. Cutting corners here because it is only an addition guarantees the extension settles at a different rate than the original. Where the two meet, the existing edge restraint is removed and the courses are tied together, or a border course is run along the junction as a deliberate transition. Anything that needs to run under the new area — lighting cable, gas sleeve, drainage — goes in now. Extend when the original is sound, the size is the only shortfall, and a deliberate transition is acceptable. Rebuild when the original is settling or holding water, when the match would be poor across a large visible area, when the layout was wrong to begin with, or when the extension is larger than the original — at that point you are building a new patio with an old piece attached.
