Here's how to choose between them for a Lake Norman property. ## What Each One Does A drainage swale is a shallow, graded channel in the landscape that carries surface water from one point to another by slope and gravity. No pipe, no underground infrastructure — just shaped earth, typically seeded or sodded, that functions as an open water pathway. A piped drainage system moves water underground through perforated or solid pipe, invisible at the surface, with only the inlet and outlet points visible. ## When Swales Make Sense Swales are the right choice when there's enough yard space to create a gradual, stable channel with adequate slope, when the water volume is manageable enough that the channel won't erode under heavy flow, and when the route from problem area to outlet is straightforward. They're also the right choice when budget is a constraint — a well-graded swale costs less than a piped system and requires no pipe, fittings, or basins. On Lake Norman lots where the problem is simply that water from a neighbor's property enters the yard or that roof runoff has no clear path to the street, a swale along the property edge is often the most efficient solution. ## When Underground Pipe Is Better Piped systems are better when the drainage path has to cross through lawn or landscape areas where an open channel would be impractical or unsightly. They handle higher water volume without erosion. They're necessary when the outlet is far from the problem area and maintaining a consistent swale slope across that distance isn't feasible. They're also the right call when HOA rules prohibit visible drainage channels. ## The Combination Approach Many Lake Norman drainage solutions use both. Water collected at a low point in the yard enters a catch basin, travels underground through pipe, and daylights at a swale that carries it the final distance to an outlet or the street. The pipe handles the high-volume, non-visible portion; the swale handles the final open-air discharge. The right choice between swale and pipe depends heavily on your specific lot — slope, soil, available outlet, and how much water you're managing.
