Get those right and a screen fills in fast. ## Reliable evergreen screens for this area These are the species we install most often on Lake Norman properties because they hold up in Piedmont clay and our summer heat: - Green Giant arborvitae — fast, tall, best all-round screen for full sun. - Emerald Green arborvitae — narrow and tidy for tighter side yards. - Nellie Stevens holly — dense, deer-resistant, tolerates part shade. - Cryptomeria — a softer look with good height where arborvitae is overused. - Wax myrtle — quick informal screening for wetter edges of a lot. ## Spacing that actually screens Green Giants go in at roughly 5 to 6 feet on center for a solid hedge, or 8 feet if you want individual form. Emerald Greens are tighter, around 3 feet. Nellie Stevens hollies want 5 to 6 feet. Crowding plants to get instant coverage backfires — air movement drops, lower branches thin out, and you get a bare base in a few years. ## Planting in Carolina clay Dig wide, not deep. The hole should be two to three times the width of the root ball with the top of the ball slightly above finished grade so the plant never sits in a bowl. Break up glazed sidewalls, backfill with native soil blended with compost, and mulch two to three inches without piling against the trunk. Drainage matters more than fertilizer here. Evergreens planted in a low spot that stays wet will decline no matter how well they are fed. ## Watering the first two seasons New screens need deep, infrequent water — a slow soak two or three times a week through the first summer, tapering in year two.
